Calliope

The interview went well. Okay, I nailed it, and that’s not just confidence talking. I have evidence to back it up. During the first round, we discussed my background, in addition to why I was thinking of retiring from storm chasing to begin using my teaching degree.

I was completely honest, something I know I need to start being with my family and friends, and told Mr. Jackson about my asthma and allergy issues. He was very sympathetic, understanding why it would make me question my future with the team. He was also enthusiastic about what my knowledge of the weather could bring to the staff.

When he asked if I’d be interested in meeting the board, I eagerly said yes, of course, not realizing he meant then. I discovered they were the second and final round, and before I knew it, they were going over the salary, benefits, and wondering if I could start next week. I was too shocked to do anything but nod, and walked around in a daze as they gave me a tour of the school and showed me the classroom that would be mine.

The whole time, all I wanted to do was call Tank and tell him the good news, but I resisted, deciding to do it in person instead. Which is what I’m on my way to do. I’m running a lot later than expected since I hadn’t planned on being there for three hours, but it was worth it.

My face hurts from smiling so much, something I thought would make others look at me strangely, but they merely return it with a friendly wave. Pulling into the driveway, I brush my hand along the dashboard of my car, loving the sedan Tank was thoughtful enough to find for me. I don’t see his truck yet, and I’m shocked I beat him home.

As I open my door, I laugh when Kevin immediately jumps over me and into the passenger seat. “Sweetheart, we’ll go for a ride later, okay? Why are you outside?”

That question is answered when a woman’s voice states, “That would be my doing.” Ummmm… When I look up, I see Tank’s sister, recognizing her from when he’d pointed her out at the fair, and various pictures around the place. This is my first time actually meeting her.

“Hello, Bree. I’m Callie.” Since Tank started using my full name, I’ve discovered that I don’t like introducing myself as such, keeping those that address me as Calliope a select bunch that means the world to me. Not that my friends don’t, it’s just…different. “Tank didn’t mention you were coming over.” I hope that didn’t sound as defensive as it did in my ears.

Thankfully, she grins, letting me know, “I like to stop by randomly, just to throw him off. But as it seems you’re living here now, I, uh, think I’ll quit doing that.” When she laughs, a potentially awkward situation is diffused, and I’m relieved.

“He shouldn’t be much longer,” I offer. “You’re welcome to stay and wait for him.
